D6 Firmware

• This service supplies software that can be used to update the D6 camera “C” firmware to version 1.60. Before proceeding, select [Firmware version] in the camera [SETUP MENU] and check the camera firmware version. You will not need to download or install this update if the firmware listed above is already installed. • This update includes all changes made in previous updates. • A card reader and computer are required for the firmware update. • Read the information below before proceeding.

GNSS Module Firmware Update Following the update of D6 firmware “C” (performed with the first update), the GNSS module firmware will be updated with the second update. To perform the second update, follow Steps 3, 4, and 5 in “Updating the Camera Firmware”. Note: The second update is not necessary if the GNSS module’s firmware “G” is already 0.17, as with which version, the improvement has already been made.

• GNSS module firmware update is now available. Note: The second update is not necessary if the GNSS module's firmware “G” is already 0.17, as with which version, the improvement has already been made. Note: Refer to “GNSS Module Firmware Update” for updating procedures. • The firmware for the GNSS module has been updated. - Improved acquisition performance when used in certain areas where the quasi-zenith satellite “QZSS” can be acquired. • Changed the default values for the following settings displayed when connecting wirelessly: - Encryption keys - The password displayed after the camera's default settings are restored

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.50 to 1.51

• Fixed the following issues: - Taking pictures with [Enable] selected for [Flicker reduction] > [Flicker reduction setting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] and aperture stopped down using either a camera control to which depth-of-field preview was assigned or the aperture stop-down button on a PC lens would in rare cases cause the camera to stop responding with “Err” displayed in the top control panel and viewfinder. - Double-tapping the display to cancel playback zoom would result in the monitor failing to turn off automatically following the delay selected for Custom Setting c4 [Monitor off delay] > [Playback] in the [CUSTOM SETTING MENU]. - Sliding the vibration reduction mode switch on an AI AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED lens from “ON” to “OFF” would disable autofocus on the camera to which the lens was attached.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.40 to 1.50

• A [USB] item has been added to the setup menu. For more information, see the Supplementary Firmware Update Manual. • When assigned to a control using Custom Setting f3 [Custom controls] in the [CUSTOM SETTING MENU], [Recall shooting functions] can now be used while the camera is connected via USB to a device running an app such as NX Tether or NX MobileAir.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.33 to 1.40

• Added a Select all to send (wired LAN/WT) item to the playback “i” menu that can be used to mark for upload all pictures that meet the criteria currently selected for filtered playback. • Changes have been made to the buttons used to mark pictures for upload when the camera is connected to a computer or FTP server: - Pictures can now be marked for priority upload by holding the OK button and pressing the multi selector left. - Holding the OK button and pressing the center of the multi selector now marks pictures for non-priority upload. • Fixed the following issues: - Auto white balance would not perform as expected if (a) white balance was not among the settings recalled via Custom Setting f3 (Custom controls) > Recall shooting functions or Recall shooting functions (hold) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU or (b) a Recall shooting functions or Recall shooting functions (hold) operation was performed while exposure and white balance were locked using a control assigned AE/AWB lock (hold) via Custom Setting f3 (Custom controls) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. - Aperture would be reset when the preview button was pressed to zoom in on the live view display at maximum aperture.

• Fixed an issue that would in very rare instances result in a burst of two photos being taken with a single press of the shutter-release button when Single frame was selected for release mode.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.31 to 1.32

• Fixed an issue that in very rare instances resulted in the shutter not being released when the shutter-release button was pressed during consecutive shots of a portrait subject.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.30 to 1.31

• Fixed the following issues: - Waking the camera by pressing a control such as the AF-ON button after the standby timer had expired would in very rare instances cause camera settings to change or shooting would to start without the shutter-release button being pressed. - The shutter release would in very rare instances stop responding after a burst of photographs in continuous release mode or after an uninterrupted series of photographs taken in quick succession in single-frame release mode.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.20 to 1.30

• A new option, Keep exp. when f/ changes, has been added to the Custom Settings menu at position b8. When Off is selected for ISO sensitivity settings > Auto ISO sensitivity control in the photo shooting menu in mode M, actions such as switching to a lens with a different aperture range may cause unintended changes to aperture. If an option other than Off is selected for Keep exp. when f/ changes, the camera will adjust shutter speed or ISO sensitivity to maintain exposure at its current value. Other actions to which automatic exposure maintenance applies include: - adjusting zoom on lenses that have different values for maximum aperture at maximum and minimum zoom, - attaching a teleconverter, and - changing the focus distance when a micro lens is attached. • Changes have been made to improve the reliability of the autofocus operation.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.11 to 1.20

• A Recall shooting functions (hold) item has been added to Custom Setting f3 Custom controls. Assigning this role to a control lets you recall previously-saved values for settings such as exposure and metering by pressing the control once during viewfinder photography. The previous values can be restored by pressing the control a second time. Recall shooting functions (hold) can be assigned to the Preview button, Fn1 button, Fn2 button, Fn button for vertical shooting, AF-ON button, Sub-selector center, AF-ON button for vertical shooting, Movie record button, or Lens focus function buttons. • A new option, Prefer sub-selector center, has been added to the Custom Settings menu at position f13. Although at default settings the sub-selector cannot be used to position the focus point while the center is pressed, selecting Off for Prefer sub-selector center lets you hold the center and still position the focus point by pressing the sub-selector up, down, left, or right. You can, for example, assign AF-area mode to the center of the sub-selector and then use the sub-selector to position the focus point while the center still serves in the AF-area mode role. • A Focus point selection speed item has been added to Custom Setting a17 Focus point options. The speed at which the focus points for viewfinder photography can be cycled by holding the sub-selector or keeping the multi selector pressed up, down, left, or right can be chosen from Normal, High, and Extra high. • Ratings are now displayed at all times during playback zoom, even when None (image only) is selected for playback display options. • The camera can now more reliably focus on poorly-lit low-contrast subjects when dynamic-area AF is selected for AF-area mode.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.10 to 1.11

• Fixed the following issues: - In the case of zoom lenses for which no previous saved values existed, performing auto AF fine-tuning at one focal length (minimum or maximum) would result in the value for the remaining focal length failing to save correctly. This fix was accompanied by changes in the workflow. - When radio-controlled AWL was used with two or more remote flash units, flash output for i-TTL flash control would not be adjusted to reflect the values chosen for: ▹ flash compensation, ▹ exposure compensation (Entire frame selected for Custom Setting e3 Exposure comp. for flash in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU), ▹ the flash bracketing increment, or ▹ the exposure/flash bracketing increment

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.00 to 1.10

• Users can now choose the band (2.4 or 5 GHz) for the host SSID when connecting to wireless networks via a WT-6 wireless transmitter attached to the camera. The band is listed in Connection Wizard network-selection dialog and post-connection in the Wired LAN/WT display. • Autofocus for viewfinder photography has been improved. • Focus-point selection now works smoothly even if the user abruptly switches directions on the multi selector or sub-selector. • Fixed the following issues: - Autofocus sometimes produced unpredictable results when used with certain AF-S lenses with maximum apertures faster than f/2.8. - Instead of flashing, the network indicator would remain lit when an Ethernet connection was established. - The WT-6 wireless transmitter could not be used to join wireless networks with SSIDs containing a space, semicolon (“;”), ampersand (“&”), or backslash (“\”, or in the JIS character set, “¥”). - The over- and under-exposure indicators in the viewfinder were reversed when +0- was selected for Custom Setting f9 (Reverse indicators) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. - The exposure indicators were slow to refresh when shutter speed, aperture, or ISO sensitivity were adjusted using the main- or sub-command dial. - If, when Focus point and AF-area mode was selected for Custom Setting a5 (Store points by orientation) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU, the standby timer expired with the camera in portrait (tall) orientation and the camera was then rotated to landscape (wide) orientation before the standby timer was reactivated, the camera would not restore the AF-area mode previously selected for landscape orientation, but would instead switch to the AF-area mode selected when the camera was in portrait orientation. - The following would not be immediately updated to reflect the true number of exposures remaining after pictures were deleted: • the number of exposures remaining shown in the top control panel when the camera was off, and • the frame-count display in the rear control panel when Frame count was selected for Custom Setting d12 (Rear control panel) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. - The AF fine-tuning options item could be used to store only one set of fine-tuning values for AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR lenses: users could store either values for use with the built-in teleconverter or values for use without, but not both.

Viewing the Camera Firmware Version

1. Turn the camera on.
2. Press the camera MENU button and select [Firmware version] in the [SETUP MENU] to display the camera firmware version.
3. Check the camera firmware version.
4. Turn the camera off.

Updating the Camera Firmware

1. Download the following firmware file to your computer.
   Please make sure you have the downloaded firmware file on your computer.
   • D6__0160.bin (the camera firmware)
2. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “D6__0160.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
   Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
3. Insert the memory card into the Slot 1 on the camera and turn the camera on.
4. Select [Firmware version] in the [SETUP MENU] and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
5. Once the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
6. Confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.
